Twilight Saga

The Twilight Saga consists of four books written by author Stephenie Meyer - Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. The story is of a teenage girl who moves out from the city of Phoenix, Arizona, to live with her father in the cold and wet town of Forks and follows her blossoming love affair with a vampire.

At the beginning of Twilight (the first book of the series), the young girl-Bella Swan aged 17-has her first day at Forks High School where she catches her initial glimpse of Edward Cullen. During the course of the novel, Bella finds out that Edward is a vampire and they fall in love.

Edward Cullen is part of a coven of "vegetarian" vampires, meaning they don't drink the blood of humans, only animals, unlike others of their kind. He belongs to a family or "coven" of vampires (The Olympic Coven). For public purposes, he is the adopted son of Carlisle Cullen and Esme Cullen and adopted brother of Emmett and Alice Cullen and Jasper and Rosalie Hale who all feature heavily throughout the series.

However, with a vampire as a boyfriend, Miss Swan soon finds herself in trouble with her first encouter of hostile vampires- James, Victoria and Laurent. She is put into life threatening danger when fooled into meeting up with James alone, but the Cullen family catch up with her and kill him and Bella ends up safe in hospital with the love of her life next to her. At the end of the book Edward takes Bella to their school prom and she asks him to change herself into a vampire, to which he refuses and this leads right into the second, third and finally fouth book.

The series is a romantic fantasy fiction for young-adult readers but can be enjoyed by any age range, as the films can also. The books were published by Little, Brown and Company from 2005-2008. The Twilight Saga has won plenty of awards, including the 2009 Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Book and Breaking Dawn won "Children's Book Of The Year" in 2008. The books have been translated into 38 different languages and sold 85 million copies globally (November 2009).

Twilight has been called "a full-blown pop culture phenomenon" by Gina McIntyre of Los Angeles Times and even the Irish Times have claimed that "The Twilight books...have generated a movement that strains definitions of the word 'cult'.

However, the fan base is not entirely just teenage girls. Kelly Clarkson has written a song about New Moon and has also called herself a "Twilight Nerd" and the Twilight Fever has also spread to the high and mighty as even Barack Obama said that he and Malia, his young daughter have bonded over the books.
